Chapter Community Activities
DAR Good Citizens
Our chapter recognizes students chosen by their schools who exhibit the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. We encourage students who show these qualities in their homes, schools, and communities.
Service for Veterans
We support and honor veterans of all wars, and we have a special place in our hearts for women veterans. We write cards to veterans and visit them in veterans homes. In addition, the General Samuel Hopkins Chapter acknowledges dedicated volunteers in our community by presenting awards for outstanding service to veterans.
Conservation
The General Samuel Hopkins Chapter cares about the environment. Every chapter meeting includes a "Conservation Moment." In addition, the chapter offers an award to a deserving adult volunteer in our community who has an excellent record in conservation.
Vietnam Veterans Commemoration
NSDAR has partnered with The United States of America Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration to honor veterans of the Vietnam War. The General Samuel Hopkins Chapter held two public events in 2016 honoring our community's veterans and their families.
Annual Community Service Award
This award goes to an individual or organization who has contributed to the community in an outstanding manner through voluntary heroic, civic, benevolent service, or by organizing or participating in community activities.
8th Grade American History Essay Contest
This award goes to a local eighth grader who has submitted an essay on a topic chosen by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The topic for 2018-2019 is the 19th Amendment to the Constitution passed on August 18, 1920. Our chapter's winner is Mary Margaret Vickers, daughter of Susan and Mike Vickers. Mary Margaret is also the state winner!
Constitution Week every September
This is a week of observance for the foundation of the American form of government. We encourage the study of and educate the public about the Constitution. This year Constitution Week is September 16-20, 2019.
Support for DAR Schools
Through donations and collection of box tops, we support DAR-approved schools in rural and disadvantaged areas where public education was once not available, including the Hindman Settlement School, among others.
Lineage Research Assistance
We provide research assistance to prospective members of our chapter.
